Are the Stem Cells Medicine or Illusion?

Everywhere is more divided opinions about whether mother should keep the cord blood. Many wonder why the state does not establish its own bank and has access to everything that happens with such stored cells.

Taking stem cells from the mother umbilical cord after the birth of a child, in recent years has experienced great popularity, in the world. It is estimated that more than 15,000 women from our country decided to take this step. However, freezing cells in designated banks because of eventual use for therapeutic purposes is divided opinions. While some continue to argue that this is the most comfortable form of treatment for many diseases, others point out that there is no evidence on their implementation and effectiveness.

From German clinic in Nuremberg even parents warn you not to fall under the influence of advocates giving stem cells from the umbilical cord, because it comes down only to “non-refundable loss of money.” They stress that it is a lucrative business on which the data are very poor. And for their widespread use in the treatment of heart, brain, diabetes, Parkinson’s and other diseases research results are rather modest, reminiscent from Nuremberg.

For use in humans does not yet have any valid data that in this way could help the diseased tissue or organ, which does not mean that in the future will not find the answer to their use in the field of regenerative medicine. But, this is primarily the stem cells of other organs and tissues. As for the stem cells from umbilical cord blood, there is little chance that they can be applied in this way, according to the European medical centers.

And for those who are not informed, the question arises – what are actually stem cells?

- These are primary, unspecified cells that can develop into cells of a particular tissue. The grounds are each embryo, until the moment when it begins the process of creating specific tissues and organs. Of them, in fact, occur all the other cells grouped into tissues – neurons, blood muscle, blood cells, liver tissue, the cornea … After the birth of the body continues the creation of stem cells that are used for regeneration of damaged tissues throughout life, but they are now adult stem cells.

They have great potential for self-repair, as well as a large enough capacity to proliferate and mature, and as such have a specific therapeutic use. The Combination of growing factors are developed in the tissue corresponding to the tissue to be cured. In theory, if it comes to regenerative medicine, these cells are prepared in the laboratory and placed in a room whose body part missing for it regeneration or renewal.

- Very important for the immune system, which cover the deficits of certain cells. There is certain information on their application in orthopedics, where it provides the recovery of bone marrow after partial or total damage, as in other branches of medicine. But it is all not enough, because regenerative medicine has not yet reached such a level that would have been absolutely successful. In stem cells, growth factors actually missing, which is only possible, through genetic engineering, to enable them to be created.

Only under such conditions it is possible to talk about the healing properties of stem cells and their therapeutic effect. In this sense, their application is extremely modest, which can confirm the doctors themselves. In addition, biomedicine is developing so fast that the question is whether the stem cells for several years in general would be used for medical purposes.

And stem cells from the umbilical cord?

- Only these cells are a different story. They can be used for the occurrence of rare diseases, where the incidence of one patient to the thousands of cases. In situations when matched, they could be used in the treatment of close relatives or unrelated recipient to correspond. From the medical point of view it would be a logical solution that national bank would store stem cells from the umbilical cord, primarily for the treatment of rare diseases.

I believe that every mother will agree to be a giver, when she explained the purpose of taking the umbilical cord, which, anyway, is corrected. Especially as a method of collecting stem cells from umbilical cord blood after birth is absolutely no risk to the baby or for the mother. And she would not have anything to pay. Thus, from the storage of stem cells from the umbilical cord, the only benefit has the bank.

The future is in regenerative medicine:

- Regenerative medicine is the future in this century. The application of stem cells may be an illness could be cured completely, or to improve the health status of the patient. Certain positive results were obtained in leukemia, immunological disorders, metabolic diseases and central nervous system.

Stem cells that create special conditions not only blood, but also other cells of the body, were discovered fifteen years ago. With the help of certain stimuli stem cells are capable of in some damaged organs and tissues build healthy cells of bone, cartilage, liver, muscle, heart muscle cells, or tiny blood vessels, or endothelial cells. Due to this feature, immature stem cells with unlimited biological potential can be “grafted” or remain permanently and thus provide a complete and long-term recovery, and reconstruction of damaged organs and tissues. Most importantly, for all of these procedures are taken stem cells are adult or child.

They can even be renewed. In some situations, even reasonably take the stem cells of another person, because they are more effective immunity of the patient. The explanation that the procedure is painful, because stem cells are usually collected by aspiration of the bone marrow, bone or pelvic organ donors as well as from peripheral blood, is not a sufficient argument for favoring stem cells from the umbilical cord. Especially, as their action is limited, say medical experts.
