Depression is not just a Disease of the Soul but Also Disease of the Body!

Depression
Some scientists have already examined the effects of drugs on depression, but not to all depressed people are discovered signs of inflammation, nor all persons who have had high levels of inflammation developed this disorder. Depression, perhaps, is not a mental illness, that was thought for many years, but is physical.

The latest research shows that there is a link between inflammatory processes in the body and mood disorders. Most people feel tired, depressed, without energy and without enthusiasm when they’re hurt or sick. This behavior is caused by activation of the immune response in the organism. This is how the brain saves energy when body can heal itself. This immune response can occur in people with depression. This initiated researchers to hypothesize that the depression is, in fact, the side effects of the inflammatory process.

Clinical psychologist and researcher George Slavic from the University of California is one of the main proponents of depression as a physical illness. This assumption is based on the fact that vulnerability of the troubles in the social life triggers for cytokine release. These molecules are messengers of the immune system and play a significant role in organizing the response to injury and infection. This inflammatory process, explains Slavic, can trigger serious changes in behavior, including depression.

The idea that activation the immune response could be a trigger for depression is not something new. There are early records of depression that occurred after flu noticed by doctor Daniel Tuk in the 19th century in England. However, after publication of veterinarians Benjamin Hart 1988 phenomenon behavior during and after the acute illness, began significant interest of scientists. Hart has described in detail how behave diseased animals. During acute infection, which was accompanied by a fever, the animals only wanted to sleep, lost their appetite, desire to socialize or beautify, physical activity reduced to a minimum, and also manifested some signs of depression.

These changes in behavior, as well as the immune response, are result of survival strategy that imposes a priority of keeping energy recovery. Cytokines that have affected the behavior of the patients were observed, as a link between the immune system and the brain. Changes in behavior during the disease are similar to those that occur in depression, and the researchers did not take long to link the phenomenon of patient behavior and mental disorders.

These speculations are supported by the results of studies that have shown that depression can be experimentally induced by the addition of cytokines and other immune system agents that cause an inflammatory response. With depression are often associated inflammatory diseases such as heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also a side effect of the cytokine treatment in order to strengthen the immune system. From the available documents, however, all people that have depression were not revealed signs of inflammation and opposite – all the people who had high levels of inflammation were not having depression. This process depends on a complex interplay of additional risk factors that may vary in different combinations with any person. These factors include:

- Genetic hypersensitivity, which affects the intensity of response to inflammation,

- Other medical conditions,

- Acquired an increased vigilance during the stress that is associated with trauma in early childhood, the current troubles or physical stress,

- Healthy habits, such as sleep, diet and physical activity.

In the context of the assumption that inflammation causes depression, some scientists have already tested the operation inflamed drugs to depression. While some respondents had high levels of inflammation, from the treatment, for those who have not had an increase in inflammation was observed improvement. Despite the desire to find a more effective treatment for depression, we should not forget that the response of the immune system, including inflammation, has a specific purpose. Protect us from infections, diseases and injuries. Cytokines act in many ways, often very subtle, to fulfill a number of tasks that have to organize an immune response. Underestimating their role might have negative consequences.

Despite the enthusiasm that marked inflammation as the main culprit for psychiatric conditions, you cannot ignore the fact that depression is not just a diagnosis. Thus, the depression, as for example melancholy, is classified in disease. They may be a reaction on the environment, existential crisis, but also a normal behavior. These different states contribute to various biological, social and psychological reasons. Any attempt to find a single cause that will explain everything must be rejected. When we talk about living organisms, solution is never so simple. Finally, cannot be ignored the fact that some changes must occur in the brain, in regions that are responsible for regulating mood, to manifest depression.
