The lack of diplomas could be just as harmful to your health as smoking, said US scientists whose study appears in the journal PLoS One.

By analyzing the existing data on the mortality rate of Americans depending on the level of education, they found that in 2010 the United States was possible to avoid at least 145,000 deaths – equal to the number of deaths from smoking, if those persons continue studies after high school.

Among the main risk factors that are associated with low levels of education are poor diet, lack of medical care, inadequate living conditions and heavy manual labor.

All this produces a high level of stress that negatively affects on the immune system and promotes cardiovascular diseases.

Taking into account the results of this study, pupils may in the future think well before they decide to run away from school, claim the authors the study.
